Speaker 1:There is a Zen story. Now I don't know if this is an actual Zen story or just something that was made up. It's a story of a young boy who is constantly overthinking and constantly worried all the time. He doesn't go out and play, he doesn't hang out with kids, he just worries and is anxious. And he goes and visits a Zen monk and the monk hands him a glass of water and he says to him how heavy do you think that water is? And he goes it's not heavy, it's not heavy. He said to him if you were to hold on to that water cup for an hour, how heavy would it be? Oh, yeah, it might get heavy. What if you were to hold on to it for five hours? Oh, I don't think I could do that. That would weigh a lot. Well, what if you were to hold on to it for a week? Oh, I could never do that, he said.
Speaker 1:But you're holding on to all that pain, in some cases years ago, and we often drag those situations and those issues into our present moment of now issues into our present moment of now. So how can we gain some clarity, mental clarity, and number one would be to let that shit go. Anytime you are holding on to something, something that's stuck in your craw, it is only causing you more mental weight. You have the permission and the right to let it go if it is not serving you, and if thinking about it is not adding anything extra to the outcome or to make the situation better, then it is just clogging up your mental mind and it is not helpful.
Speaker 1:The other thing that is important to start to do for yourself when you feel as though you have a lot of extra thoughts and they're weighing on you, is find the tiny bit of spaces between these thoughts. We often think of everything as coming at us all at once and we forget that between all that there is space and there is some bits of Zen in there. What you think about you get more of as, as you already know, I've said this before when you start to focus on the other things that are around the issues, like maybe looking out your window and seeing a bird on a branch and it gives you a little bit of clarity or talking to a loved one brings you peace. We find these moments, but we don't grab onto them, we don't hold onto them. We let them fleet and flutter away and instead we pull in all the crap we don't want. Find a little bit of presence in your moments. Find a little bit of presence in your moments. Just drop yourself into the present moment as often as you possibly can, because every time you do that, you're training your brain that this is something good and this is something helpful, and it's your natural state of being. So once you learn how to do this, it takes no effort on your part. Now is your brain going to think? Absolutely, it's what it does. It can't help but think You're going to have that stream of consciousness floating by, but you can still drop yourself in those mindful moments, and when you do that, try to stay there for as long as you can, even if it's an extra second or three. The more you stay there, the more your brain gets used to it, and if you do notice those thoughts going by, let them go by, unless it's something you have to deal with, you need to think about, you need to take care of, then you don't need to be bothered by it and you can just let it move on by.
Speaker 1:This is a short podcast, as you know, most of my podcasts are, but I leave you with this word of wisdom from the movie Kung Fu Panda Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present. You take care and I will see you in the next podcast episode. At times we feel as though our mind is going a mile a minute and we can't find clarity. So on this particular episode, we're going to talk about that.
